OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - A federal jury this week convicted a former Indianola Police Department narcotics officer of bribery.
Prosecutors say 32-year-old Tony Cooper of Ruleville will be sentenced later. He faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine up to $250,000 and up 3 years of supervised release.
The U.S. attorney's office for northern Mississippi announced Friday that Cooper was convicted Wednesday after a 3-day trial in Oxford before U.S. District Judge Neal Biggers Jr.
Cooper remains free on bond until sentencing. An indictment charged that he accepted bribes in exchange for protecting drug traffickers.
