St. Martinville 'littered' with yellow for troops

Associated Press - March 4, 2010 9:14 AM ET

ST. MARTINVILLE, La. (AP) - Much of St. Martinville is tied up with yellow ribbons to support local soldiers who will soon be heading to Iraq.

John Colletti of the local Knights of Columbus says the group is challenging every town in St. Martin Parish to show support of Louisiana National Guard troops who will soon be leaving.

The deployment ceremony for the 256th Infantry Brigade's 3,500 soldiers is Friday at Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg, Miss.

Colletti hopes other Knights of Columbus chapters around Acadiana will take on similar campaigns to support the troops.

St. Martinville Mayor Thomas Nelson said city hall employees began putting up yellow ribbons before the campaign, in hopes of a parade for the soldiers before their deployment. But he says the Guard's travel plans derailed that plan.
