VILONIA, Ark. (AP) - Fifth-graders at Vilonia Elementary School have learned that the movie "Gone with the Wind," set in the South around the time of the Civil War, is fictional.
Daniel Cockrell, a youth education coordinator with The Department of Arkansas Heritage, told the students this week that the movie didn't reflect the real world as it existed then. He said women weren't generally wearing freshly laundered hoop skirts but instead mostly wore tattered clothing.
Cockrell told the students that, unless relatives migrated to Arkansas in the past 100 years, more than likely they had relatives who fought on one side or the other of the Civil War.
