Ark House speaker: $5K lottery scholarships likely

Associated Press - November 24, 2009 12:54 PM ET

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - House Speaker Robbie Wills says it's likely the Legislature will offer $5,000 college scholarships to 4-year schools using money raised by Arkansas' lottery.

Wills said Tuesday he thinks there would be unanimous support in the Legislature for the scholarship amounts, which would include $2,500 for 2-year schools. Lawmakers next year must set the amounts for the scholarships funded by the lottery, which began in September.

A legislative oversight committee must recommend the scholarship amounts before the Legislature meets in February.

The lottery's commission chairman also told the committee that the games' staff attorney, Bridgette Frazier, had resigned her post over a disagreement on which employees are entitled to merit raises.
