Barge hits Jefferson Parish bridge

Associated Press - November 10, 2009 12:14 PM ET

GRETNA, La. (AP) - Jefferson Parish officials have closed the Lapalco Boulevard bridge because a crane barge hit a piling.

Coast Guard Lt. Sue Kerver says the crane barge General E. Lee was heading toward the Intracoastal Waterway about 2 a.m. Tuesday, to be moored for Tropical Storm Ida.

She says the Coast Guard is investigating why the accident happened.

Deano Bonano, chief administrative assistant to Parish President Aaron Broussard, says parish engineers would spend Tuesday assessing damage.

Kerver said investigators don't believe Ida's winds or storm surge played a big part in the accident. Waterways in New Orleans were open to limited vessel traffic.
