CRUST: You can buy two packages of pie crust in the dairy section, let set out according to pkg. directions, cut six 6 inch squares from pie crust. OR my homemade crust is DELICIOUS... 3 Cups All Purpose flour 1 Tsp. Salt 3 Tsp Baking Powder Mix together well, Add: 1 stick Crisco Butter Flavored Shortening Using two forks, blend shortening into flour mixture until it is like course sand. Sprinkle 3/4 cup of milk over the crumbs and gentle stir with a fork until mixed in well, form ball. On a floured pastry sheet or count ertop, roll out the dough into a rectangle, cut six [you can squeeze 8 squares out of this for 8 apple dumplings if you use the small 3" apples] Take Six 3" Jonathon Apples [or similar baking apple] Peel apples, cut in half, remove center core with a melon baller, fill "holes" with 1 Tablespoon sugar, put both halves back together, place a thin slice of butter on the top to "hold the two halves together" Place the apple in the center of one pastry square, sprinkle the butter covered apple with cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg. Using your finger, dip finger into a small dish of milk and wet the outsides of the "pastry square', bring opposite points together on the top, then the other opposite point together, then pinch the four sides together. Spray Pam into a 9x13 baking pan, place apple dumpling into the pan, finish making other 5 to 7 dumplings. Pour boiled sugar mixture into the pan all around the sides, not over the apples. Bake 375 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Remove from oven, using a spatula, remove one apple dumpling and place into a dish or serving dessert plate, top with vanilla ice cream if desired.
